PASIG CITY – Former athlete-turned-politician Robert Jaworski Jr. has joined reelectionist Mayor Victor Ma. Regis “Vico” Sotto as vice mayoralty candidate.
Jaworski, who had served as Pasig congressman, is the running mate of Mayor Sotto.
Vice Mayor Iyo Christian Caruncho-Bernardo, meanwhile, will run against Sotto. Bernardo is identifed with former Mayor Robert Eusebio.
Mayor Sotto filed his CoC for a second term at the Comelec office at the Pasig City Hall Compound accompanied by his celebrity parents, Marvic Valentin Castelo Sotto, also known as Vic Sotto, and Constancia Angeline Reyes Bunla or Coney Reyes.
Sotto said he needs more time in office to carry out the changes he wants in the city and make sure they are felt by the Pasigueños.
“Nandiyan na ‘yung mga reporma. Iba na ngayon. Paiigtingin na lang natin at sisiguraduhin na damang dama ng bawat Pasigueño ang mas pinabubuting serbisyo ng pamahalaang lungsod,” he said in a Facebook post.
The young Sotto defeated Mayor Bobby Eusebio in the 2019 mayoral race with over 80,000-vote lead, ending the 27-year reign of the Eusebio clan.
Jaworski is the son of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) legend and former senator Robert Jaworski.
The young Jaworski, who is married to equistrian Mikaela María Antonia Mikee Cojuangco, also played for the PBA.
Drafted in 1995, he ended his short but meaningful three-year career with one championship which came in the 1997 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Jaworski, who is popularly known as Dodot, served as Pasig’s congressman in the House of Representatives from 2004 to 2007.
He ran for mayor in 2007 but lost to then Mayor Robert Bobby Eusebio who governed Pasig for over 11 years until Sotto won the mayoral elections in 2019.
Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo said he is supporting the Sotto-Jaworski tandem.
Romulo’s nephew, Simon Romulo-Tantoco, is one of the candidates for the Pasig’s city council.
